so u start with 10 power
You start with 10 claims and gain one more max claim each week the group stays "alive". Group power has nothing to do with amount of claims. Group power is how much "health" your group has until people who recently killed you or a groupmember can start breaking/placing blocks in your claim. You can adjust max power using the command /g adjustmaxpower (10 - -10). If u do the command with 10 you will have max power 20, -10 will give you max group power=0. The lower max group power you have, the more you drop an enemies group power when you kill them(not sure about the stats). 20 max group power is good for very defensive groups that rarely/never do any raids. 0 is good if you are raiding are sure you are not going to die.
Hope this helped

if you change ur power to 20, do you still need to be -3 for enemies to break blocks and -10 for ppl to loot ur chests?

Yes, but it also means your hits do less…
(edit: see below, what "hits do" is unrelated)
from digging through the code, it seems like if the attacking group's power is 11 or more, you do no power damage
(it even looks like this: if the attacking group's power is more than 11, a "negative power loss" is stored for each kill, which probably has no effect)
(the whole power computation code is tricky :-| )

wait are u saying my attacks do less damage?! or are u saying my kills take away less power per kill?

The latter. Your kills take away less power.

Ah yes, good catch, the whole thread is about group power,
but lightpaths was talking about hits (very different).

It gives your enemies a chance to wreck your house if they can kill you enough times.

Give me a break people. This is a very intuitive and simple system to use. It really can't be made any better. Thank you, APV.

/g adjustmaxpower (value)
The value is an addition or subtraction from the default of 10.
i.e. "/g adjustmaxpower 5" would give your group a power cap of 15.
i.e. "/g adjustmaxpower -6" would give your group a power cap of 4.
You can adjust your power anywhere from 0 to 20.
Having 0 as your max power, you deal 50% more damage to other groups' power.
Having 20 as your max power, you deal 50% less damage to other groups' power.
(10 = standard 100% damage to power, 5 is 125% damage to power, 0 is 150% damage to power, etc.)
Power is used as a raiding method. When a player of a group dies, their power lowers. Once their power reaches -3, blocks can be placed or broken on their claim by recent killers of their group. Each block placed or broken will slightly restore some of their power, so it's best to choose blocks wisely.
Once power reaches -10, locks can be broken.
In my opinion, we should remove the power system and replace it with DTR (Deaths Till Raidable). The current system is incomplete and was left in a buggy alpha stage when the creator left.

You say this from the perspective of someone who rarely dies, especially to PVP, and loves to raid. Obviously that lends more than a hefty amount of bias to your suggestion. Unless DTR didn't include suicides, and PVE deaths, then it's a horrible idea in my opinion. I'd rather not have my potential play-style reduced to 2 options - being pro as fuck or playing like a scared little bitch. I really enjoy the luxury of being able to die as many times as I like without having to worry about my spawn chests becoming raidable. I can jump in lava 50 times without having to worry, it's fantastic.

You're assuming I'm talking about bringing everything included in DTR to Standard, which isn't the case. I only talked about changing the system from power to # of deaths, not including every factor that would lead someone to go raidable. As is, PvE is not a factor in going raidable on Standard, so it's fair to assume I did mean bringing DTR as a PvP-strict raiding system to replace the broken, unfinished power system. SS being a survival server will definitely mean several PvE deaths, so to include PvE as a factor in going raidable would just be dumb. The only different case being typing /suicide in combat, because committing suicide in PvP to escape a PvP death or decrease in DTR/power is cheap. The thing with the current system is that it was barely tested. Apv created it with ONE test with actual players and then it was released, and it was a brief test. There is much tweaking that needs to be done to it, because it's a useless raiding element that was only implemented with the sole idea of replacing any sort of explosion-style raid (e.g. creepers, TNT, carts) and only really affects people that don't even know it exists.
